Poway News Chieftain
It would be interesting to see the calculations and data on the influx of outsiders adding "(possibly 4,000 extra road trips a day)" to the Poway traffic loading if the Wal-Mart expansion is approved. It appears from Adriane Levy-Corbin’s comments that only people who live in the city limits of Poway are welcome. MORE>>
Wal-Mart expansion beneficial
October 8, 2009
Poway News Chieftain
Most of the letters to the editor that I have read about the Wal-Mart expansion seem to highlight more cars in the parking lot, which means it will create a handicap that we would have to walk a greater distance to get into the store. The next biggest complaint is it would cause way too people from out of town filling our roads with undo wear and tear leading to needed additional repairs. MORE>>

Resistance to ‘Super-Size’ Wal-Marts Slows Progress in Region and State
August 3, 2009
San Diego Business Journal
The recent expansion of Wal-Mart Stores’ Oceanside store marks the mega-retailer’s first full-service grocery division within the county, but more are on the way.
The 14-year-old store in the Town Center North shopping center was increased in size to 158,000 square feet from 129,000 to accommodate a new grocery section.

Customers decide who stays

Poway News Chieftain
I am strongly supportive of Wal-Mart selling groceries in their Poway store. Independent studies have shown that when a Wal-Mart Supercenter comes into an area, groceries prices decline, on average, by 17 percent. For my large family (and all their teenaged friends), this will save me about $150 a month. That’s $1,800 a year that we can spend at other businesses as we will now have “extra” money. Or I may use it to pay off my mortgage sooner, or invest it.

It’s all about the unions
July 16, 2009
Poway News Chieftain
I’m tired of hearing the same old union-organized diatribe about a Wal-Mart Supercenter affecting the business of such stores as Vons, Henry’s and Stater Brothers.
Let’s be realistic. Many Powegians prefer to shop at nearby Rancho Bernardo Vons and Henry’s rather than the ones in Poway anyway. This is particularly true of people living north of Twin Peaks Road. There is a world of difference in product selection and shopping ambience at the RB stores. Then, there is a really nice Ralphs market nearby.

Poway needs a Super Wal-Mart

As a loyal Wal-Mart shopper, I truly hope that Poway's
City Council will allow Wal-Mart to expand their store
into a supercenter. I truly believe that the majority
favor the expansion, and also many people will benefit
from it. I have read that the expansion will bring more
traffic to Poway. In case people haven't noticed, there
is lots of traffic already. MORE>>
Poway Wal-Mart is part of community
October 2, 2008
North County Times
As a local business owner and particularly as someone
who operates next door to the Poway Wal-Mart store. I
want to express my firm support for the store's expansion.
During its entire 16-year tenure in the city of Poway,
Wal-Mart has proven to be a responsible, civic-minded
neighbor.
During last year's wildfires, store manager Art Gladue and his team supported fire victims and emergency personnel. The Wal-Mart parking lot, which my business shares parking space with, was full of RVs and horse trailers. And Wal-Mart employees were on the ground, providing water and supplies to those seeking refuge.

San Diego County shoppers who want to visit a Wal-Mart Supercenter are out of luck
August 23, 2008
SignOnSanDiego.com
San Diego County shoppers who want to visit a Wal-Mart Supercenter are out of luck. The nearest supercenter – offering perhaps 25,000 more items than a traditional store – is in Hemet.
That's about to change. An Oceanside facility is out for
construction bids and should open in summer 2009. A Chula
Vista center is in the late stages of permitting and a
fall 2009 opening is anticipated. An expanded store in
Vista has been approved 5-to-0 by the City Council but
is being slowed by litigation. The county is processing
an application for a Lakeside site. MORE>>
'Supercenter' will be boon to consumers OUR VIEW: Poway shoppers should cheer Wal-Mart expansion
July 10, 2008

Consumers in southeast North County should welcome the recent news that Wal-Mart has taken another step toward expanding one of its stores in Poway into a so-called "Supercenter."
It was no surprise recently when the discount giant officially submitted to Poway planners its proposal to revamp its Community Road store into one featuring an expanded variety of its current wares, plus all the offerings of a conventional grocer.

POWAY: Wal-Mart submits plans to expand Poway store
July 7, 2008
NCTimes.com
In a move anticipated for months, Wal-Mart has submitted plans to expand its Poway store into a "Supercenter" that would turn the retail outlet into a hybrid store that also sells groceries.
The expansion, a slightly scaled back version of what
originally was proposed, would add an additional 55,000
square feet to the store at 13425 Community Road, and
some residents said they feared the large store would
attract traffic from outside the city and hurt local grocery
stores they now use. MORE>>
